So your about to finish your teaching degree and head out into the world to seek employment in the education field. At this point in time you might find yourself preparing for upcoming interviews and planning the next chapter in your life. You have years of study under your belt combined with a wealth of information running through your mind. What's next you ask? It's time for you to turn that information into skills that are going to help you excel as a teacher and make you the person every principal wants working at their school.
The Professional Skills for Pre-Service Teachers website is a professional development resource which aims to provide you with the information, research and resources that will help you to build 3 important professional skills. These 3 skills are those that members of the educational community have determined as the most important skills for pre-service teachers to have before entering the workplace. These skills, along with many others are essential for those wishing to become successful teachers. This website will also provide you with a quick recap of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers which outlines all of the standards you are required to meet. As an upcoming graduate, it is essential that you understand what will be expected of you as you commence your first year of teaching (Cooper, 2011). In order to assist you in developing your knowledge and skills the 3 most important professional skills have been identified and elaborated on. |
Our Focus
This website aims to explore 3 of the 7 professional standards outlined in the National Professional Standards for Teachers, published by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL, 2011). By conducting a number of interviews with long standing members of the educational community including a Head of Curriculum and a Deputy Principal, it was possible to identify the 3 most desirable professional skills that all education graduates should display. These 3 key skills provide the foundation on which the other professional skills can be built. These attributes are:
1. Planning & Organisation: The ability to plan for and carry out engaging lessons that meet curriculum outcomes.
2. Analysing: Using data to inform the direction of lessons and support the needs of individual learners.
3. Communication: Building and supporting relationships with colleagues, parents, students and the wider community through professional communication.
To underpin the skills, I have addressed the literature and used personal reflections on teaching practices to provide an insight into these 3 professional skills. I hope this professional resource package helps you to build on your current skills and provides you with a better understanding of the skills that you must demonstrate as you enter your first year of teaching.
